Welcoming You In

Arriving down a private lane and bridge crossing the River Rothay, the high curved stone walls and entrance gates will welcome you in to the special setting of Rowan at Grasmere with its remarkable garden, generous gravelled drive and parking, and amazing vista of fells.

From here a Lakeland slate path passes in front of the raised south-facing terrace and a few steps up leads to the front door. Close by are outdoor benches, handy for removing walking boots or back packs after a fell or lake walk.

Step inside and into the interior porch, with practical tiled flooring, an oak bench and plenty of space for your coats, shoes, boots and walking gear. Then into the inner hallway with carpeted stairs and doors to kitchen and dining, utility and ground floor bedroom. The utility room is equipped with washing machine, tumble dryer, butler sink and WC.

The Heart of the House

The kitchen, dining and sun lounge areas are sure to form the heart of the home during your stay. The dining table and sun lounge seating overlooks the garden with the backdrop views across the fields to fells and crags. French doors open directly onto the south-facing terrace offering outdoor seating and dining.

The contemporary kitchen is one of the best equipped you could ask for with a choice of cooking options including AGA60 cast iron cooker, Slide & Hide electric Neff oven, gas hob with wok ring, induction hob and microwave. Combined with the large American-style fridge/freezer, walk-in pantry with wine storage, instant boiling water tap for tea/coffee and wet bar area, this kitchen will easily handle all your food and drink requirements. Two super-quiet dishwashers and the generously sized second sink make washing-up quick and easy.

A comprehensive selection of crockery, cutlery, glassware, ovenware and stainless steel pans are easily located in the cupboards.

The Lounge

The living areas of the house are arranged for either relaxed socialising or more quiet intimate occasions. Bi-fold doors from the kitchen and dining area open into the spacious lounge. A very special feature is the handsome floor-to-ceiling fireplace handcrafted from local Lakeland slate. And after a day out, the wood-burning stove will be ready to welcome you back.

Sofas upholstered with Scottish Harris Tweed wool and two relaxing armchairs allow everyone to soak-up the views of the impressive landscape from the full height windows or relax watching the HD Smart TV with FreeSat 200+ channels, catch-up TV, or complimentary Netflix. A sound bar, subwoofer and blu ray DVD player are connected.

On the shelving is a library of books featuring Lake District topics, literary and culture, walking guides with maps and descriptions, biographies and fiction.

The Bedrooms

Rowan at Grasmere has three gorgeous double ensuite bedrooms. Each benefits from pocket sprung mattresses, HD Smart TV (with Freesat, catch-up, and Netflix), built-in wardrobes and 24/7 heating. Quality bed linen, towelling, bathrobes and a hair dryer are supplied.

The en-suites are fully tiled with tall radiators to warm your towels and electric underfloor heating for ultimate indulgence. Another treat in the en-suites are walk-in showers with rain effect shower heads and handy spots for your shampoo, etc. Basins are generous and have useful drawer storage. One upstairs en-suite features a large oval bathtub.

The bedroom on the ground floor “Yan” (old Cumbrian sheep-counting dialect for the number ‘One’), has views to the garden and fells and a super-king bed which can optionally be made up as two 3ft twin beds.

On the first floor, the second bedroom, “Tyan” (dialect for the number ‘Two’), has a king size bed and spectacular feature window providing stunning views across the valley to the lower fells of Fairfield.

The third bedroom, “Tethera” (Three), enjoys views across the garden and towards Loughrigg Fell from the super-king bed. A special feature is a large oval bath in the en-suite.

Tucked upstairs on the landing, is an alcove furnished with a handmade oak desk and library shelving, leather desk chair and comfy upholstered reading chair. This quiet spot is ready to use to edit and share your photos, catch up on emails or enjoy a book or guide from our library.

Our carpeting used in the upstairs bedrooms and landing and stairs is made with Herdwick wool fleeces and woven in this region.

Terrace and Garden

The level landscaped garden has been designed to feature the panoramic scenery. It is a delight year-round with trees, herbaceous and shrub borders. Sculptures and monoliths of roughly hewn slabs from local slate quarries are placed around the garden and using the gravelled areas, paths, and paved alcoves and niches, the entire garden and inspiring views are available whatever the time of year.

The south-facing terrace is a wonderful place for alfresco eating and socialising with a large dining table seating six and a curved sofa. It’s users will be reminded why this spot was selected for a sheltered Victorian vine house. The terrace can be accessed from the garden or the French doors in the dining and sun lounge area.

Within the garden are two further paved areas, one offering an additional outdoor dining table and chairs and the other bench seating.

All are ideal viewpoints to relax and take in the inspiring landscape of the garden, meadows, and onto the fells from sunrise to sunset. At dusk low level lighting creates an after dark ambiance whether viewed from inside or outside enjoying the evening light or night stars.
