Our History

Our luxury Lakeland retreat is built on the footprint of a Victorian glass vine house which was within the grounds of a walled fruit and vegetable garden for a nearby hotel, now known as The Wordsworth.

The glorious south facing position of the vine house enabled exotic dessert grapes to be grown as a fashionable and luxurious treat to satisfy the increasing and more discerning Victorian tourists.

In the severe winter of 1947 the vine perished and the grounds fell into disuse. In 1970 the derelict site was purchased and the old vine house was transformed into a home. Over the years further developments took place and the beautiful redesign was completed in 2018 by the current owners.

Rowan has received the highest possible rating of Five Stars by Visit England’s independent assessors and the Gold Award accolade “for those that go the extra mile for their guests and visitors”. The commitment to the highest of standards continues.
